3D Game Consoles

Nintendo 3DS Review

The first Nintendo 3 D games console was unveiled in the summer of 2010 after huge speculation at the E3 games show in Los Angeles. Nintendo have called their new system the 3DS and say that it is meant as a replacement for the graphics system of the current DS, the console was due to go on sale some time in March 2011 in Britain and Europe. However, parents may find themselves balking at the £229 price tag, which is a lot higher than what the console will sell for in the United States. Although Nintendo are not offering this primarily as a games console for kids, but rather as what they call an entertainment system.

For a fully cutomisable gaming experience, a 3D depth slider allows you to alter the intensity of the 3D settings. You can also switch to 2D to play all games and applications, while benefitting from better image quality than any previous Nintendo handheld.

The Nintendo 3DS displays three dimensional images that can be seen without the need for special glasses, the new console has not one, but two screens. The lower screen acts as a normal touch screen and 3D images can only be viewed from the top screen, because two screens caused some incompatibility problems for Nintendo. The aim of the latest console, according to Nintendo, was to ensure that the DS' graphics system was fit for the twenty first century. There are two camera lenses incorporated into the 3DS which means that the user can snap and view photographs in 3D. The console has inbuilt motion and gyro sensors that react when the system is tilted so no matter at what angle or what direction players are tilting the console because the 3Ds games are motion compatible they respond straight away.

When Nintendo displayed the 3DS at the games show, it also gave a preview of the first game intended for the console and known as Kid Icarus Uprising. Nintendo said that in addition to the game at the show there were another three in development including Batman and Resident Evil Development. There were several titles showcased for the DS including Mario Sports, and for the WII, after a gap of thirteen years, Golden eye 007.

In addition to games and movies Nintendo are also promising short downloads of 3D premier football highlights after signing a partnership agreement with Sky and Eurosport. Using specialist software created by Nintendo, users will be able to choose and care for a three dimensional pet, along with short films of Shaun the Sheep and a good deal of content suitable only for an adult audience.

Like other DS consoles, the 3DS has the ability to connect to the web via WiFi hotspots. Users are able to swap and share games with other users via the StreetPass feature, which also allows users to communicate and swap information about different games. The price of the 3DS may be high but it certainly promises a new experience for gamers.

How does the Nintendo 3DS work?

The New Nintendo 3D games console achieves its 3D effect by using what is known as a parallax barrier, which is actually another LCD screen. The extra screen is positioned over the main viewing panel which creates the 3D effect by ensuring that what the user actually sees is a different set of pixels made available through various slits in the parallax.

One of the weaknesses of the system as it stands is that the user can only see things in 3D when at a certain point of the console and does not work when viewed from another angle. The bottom touch screen is also equipped with a telescoping stylus stored in the unit, while 3D images and visuals can be seen by the naked eye on the top screen.

In order to increase or lower the depth of the 3D view, Nintendo have added a slider, which when take right down turns the view into a two dimensional one by disabling the parallax barrier view.

The 3DS has the same + control pad and buttons that can be found on earlier models of the console, this one also includes a circular control pad which can direct up to 360 degrees, which means that players will have the control and freedom necessary to playing games in the twenty first century 3D world.

If you remember the analogue control stick that was provided for use with the Mario games on the Nintendo 64 system, then you'll know what we're talking about.
